Although I highly doubt anyone is out there waiting on the edge of their seats for my insignificant posts, I thought I'd report in and say I'm alive and well. Motherhood hasn't killed me (yet! Although I'm now approaching the terrible twos) but I will say that it, along with my full time job, has left me with little time to blog. Actually, any free time beyond family and close friends goes to my new passion: sewing. I'm extremely pleased to say that I've managed to teach myself to sew. Thankfully, with help from YouTube and Craftsy.com. I guess if I can learn to engineer space stuff then surely I can learn to sew. You may be wondering what started this in the first place. Well, after having my kiddo, I was bitten by the craft bug. Before I realized it, I was making him t-shirts and DIY-ing things for his first birthday. After discovering I loved making custom things with my hands, I imposed a challenge onto myself last summer to make my child's Halloween costume. And I'm not talking about hot gluing fabric and piecing other materials together. Oh no! I wanted to do for my son what my grandmother did for my siblings and I. I wanted to sew a costume from scratch using bulk fabric. My grandmother was super creative. You should have seen what she did with a needle, thread, and fabric. Oh wait, I have just the pic to show! Here is a snapshot of my siblings and I sporting her creations:

So, in keeping with the homemade tradition, I decided to make my kiddo a pirate costume this past year. I used the top left design featured on the cover of Simplicity pattern 3650. The multi-pack allows for a few other options perfect for future costume making.
And this was the result:

The only thing missing are the buttons. Not bad for a first timer, eh? If only he hadn't grown out of those pants. They could have doubles for a referee's uniform. I've tackled several other projects too. Let me know in the comments if you're interested in the others (purse, zippered pouch, stuffed animals, etc).
Anyway, that's just a snippet of what I've been up to since my last check in. Until next time, sooner rather than later I hope.
